In the last decade, so much has changed at Yves Saint Laurent.
First, Hedi Slimane changed the name from Yves Saint Laurent to simply “Saint Laurent”
… then he left and Anthony Vaccarello came roaring in.
Vaccarello kept Hedi’s cool-gang party going, but brought even more sex appeal with him.
One thing that has stayed the same in the last decade at YSL/Saint Laurent?
Their Nu Pieds (or Tribute flat) sandals.
They aren’t like a total ingénue It-Girl item, but loving an everlasting & classic sandal, I bought a pair to investigate what makes them so evergreen…
Saint Laurent Nu Pieds Sandals SIZING
For comparison, my other shoe sizes run:
-Adidas Stan Smiths, US 8
–Chanel Shoes, FR 39
–Christian Louboutin, IT/EU 39.5
–Golden Goose, IT/EU 39
–Hermès, FR 39
–Isabel Marant, FR 39-40
-Nikes, US 8.5
–Repetto, FR 39.5-40
My Saint Laurent Nu Pieds sandals, or Tribute flat sandals, in black, are a size IT/EU 39.5.
Saint Laurent’s Nu Pieds or Tribute flat sandals run half a size small.
Like, for comparison, a 39.5 is half a size up from my Saint Laurent Kate heeled sandals.
The fit is so narrow because the toe box is at a hexagonal angle, so your toes are pushed to the top.
My feet reach the very end of the insole’s golden stitching, which means that the 39.5 is likely the perfect fit.
… well, that and I can walk in them perfectly.
Are Saint Laurent Sandals Worth It?
Saint Laurent’s Nu Pieds slides are a classic comfortable sandal, with a modern angle.
The easy slide on shape — totally simple, totally 90’s, totally Hermès Oran-esque (which were created in 1997).
… then, similar to a lot of late-10’s shoes (new Bottega, By Far…), the toe box has a literal modern hexagonal angle to it — only, Saint Laurent seemingly did that before them.
Add in Stefano Pilati’s late-aughts YSL Tribute knot that we all fell head over heels for (and not only because those YSL Tribute Platform sandals are 4-5” skyscrapers), and there is Saint Laurent’s Nu Pieds (or Tribute flat sandal)…
A simple sandal with a modern angle that rivals Hermès’ Oran.
Were You Also Considering Hermès Oran sandals?
I’ve got you covered with a review of those!
… and here’s a video to show you the aesthetic differences, side by side.
PROS & CONS
Pros
–Classic: If I had to make a definitive list of the top 10 classic shoes, these would be on it.
–Simple: I mean, Saint Laurent Nu Pieds are a super simple sandal and simplicity is the workhorse for any outfit.
–Well-made: No inconsistent quality on either side… just good old fashioned no-glue quality!
Cons
–Runs a half size big: It’s not a big deal, just annoying that the sizing isn’t more consistent with Saint Laurent shoe sizing.
Some retailers call these Saint Laurent sandals “Nu Pieds sandals,” while others call them “Tribute mules sandals.”
… but a name is just a name, because no matter what you call these Saint Laurent sandals, they’ll always be a classic.
Saint Laurent Tribute flat sandals, or whatever you wanna call them, are available to purchase at Bergdorf Goodman, FWRD, Matches, Net-A-Porter, amongst other retailers from $725 USD.
… or you can grab a pair second hand from The Real Real or VestiaireCollective…
… then here’s what the bottom of an authentic pair’s sole looks like…
… and here’s a photo of the serial number inside the strap that corresponds to a number on the shoe box.

One response to “Sizing is off, but.. | Saint Laurent Nu Pieds Tribute Sandal Review”
Love these shoes! I have the same pair in a milky patent cream colour, and agree about the sizing. I’d love them in black as well like these.
