How to Style a Jumpsuit: It’s All About Your Shoes, tbh

I don’t care what you call them…

A jumpsuit, romper, coverall, boiler suit, flight suit, or even a space suit.

… because either way, this garment is the all-in-one outfit.

Sure, sundresses are fun for a first date and completely charming to wear — but jumpsuits?

With the exception of when you’ve been drinking rosé all day, have broken the seal, and subsequently need to go to the bathroom twice every half hour, jumpsuits rival sweet summer sundresses.

Here’s how to style the all-in-one piece of clothing…

How to Wear a Jumpsuit

It’s kind of hypocritical and perhaps even audacious of me to say that a jumpsuit could ever rival a sundress in the summer.

I mean, I’ve written countless reviews about sundresses that make you feel like you’re a lady who lunches for fun or a laidback California gal… and I still totally mean what I wrote and love dresses — but…

… a jumpsuit gives you extra flexibility to give off sweet, sexy, serious, and even rock n’ roll vibes.

Basically, all you need is your attitude (or whatever mood you’re feeling) and you’re set to go.

Similar to styling a sundress or midi-dress, the key component to styling a jumpsuit are your shoes…

What Shoes To Wear With a Jumpsuit

Since you don’t need to choose a top or a bottom when you wear a jumpsuit, your shoes are the most important part of your outfit.

These 4 shoes look best with a jumpsuit, especially in the summer:
1- Sandals
2- Sneakers
3- Flats
4- Heels

Sure, you could totally wear booties (and you should if you want to!) in the summer with your jumpsuits… but, me, I’m into keeping as cool as possible in the summer — so, personally, they’re a no go.

So, let’s put this jumpsuit shoe theory into practice & use 5 different jumpsuits (with 5 different cuts) to style some outfits.

Let’s jump to it…

How To Wear a Short Jumpsuit

Left to Right: K. Jacques Epicure with Dita sunglasses, an Isabel Marant Zap belt, vintage necklace, vintage earrings, and an Isabel Marant clutch; Converse with Celine sunglasses, an Isabel Marant Zap belt, an In God We Trust NYC necklace, and a tote bag with a Levi’s handkerchief; Repetto x Opening Ceremony flats with Dita sunglasses, an Isabel Marant Zap belt, Isabel Marant Ali earrings, and a Marc Jacobs clutch; Castañer espadrilles with an Isabel Marant Devis belt, Celine sunglasses, Isabel Marant x H&M earrings and a Celine Small Trio. The jumpsuit is from Frame Denim.

When you style jumpsuit shorts, wear shoes that snake up your legs — it gives such a casual, yet cool effect.

Accessorizing with a belt will also make a short utilitarian style jumpsuit look less Top Gun and more Top Model.

… but still, add aviators to make Maverick proud.

How To Wear a Spaghetti Strap Jumpsuit

Left to Right: K. Jacques Flavia with Celine sunglasses, Isabel Marant Ali earrings, and a tote bag; Converse with Celine sunglasses, a vintage necklace and a tote bag; Opening Ceremony mules with ALEXACHUNG earrings, Dita sunglasses and a tote bag with a Levi’s handkerchief; Isabel Marant Adele sandals with Celine sunglasses, Isabel Marant x H&M earrings, vintage ring, and the Row Ascot bag. The jumpsuit is from Enza Costa.

A spaghetti strap jumpsuit begs for simplicity — especially if it’s beige.

Play off the simplicity with barely-there shoes or shoes that will blend into your jumpsuit.

As for jewelry, necklaces and drop earrings will draw attention to the jumpsuit’s minimalism.

How To Wear a Wide Leg Jumpsuit

Left to Right: Emme Parsons Susan slingback sandals with Celine sunglasses, an In God We Trust NYC necklace, a vintage scarf, and a Marc Jacobs bag; Adidas Stan Smiths with Celine sunglasses, a straw hat, a vintage scarf, an In God We Trust NYC necklace, and a Telfar bag; Chanel espadrilles with a Celine sunglasses, vintage necklace and an Isabel Marant pouch; Saint Laurent Kate sandals with a Rockins skinny scarf, Isabel Marant Freak Out earrings, and a vintage bag. The jumpsuit is from Skin.

There’s something that feels so retro about this style of jumpsuit.

Go for shoes that are also subtly retro, like simple strappy shoes, Stan Smiths, or espadrilles, with your wide leg jumpsuit.

A skinny scarf is the ideal accessory to wear with your wide leg jumpsuit — not only does it make your outfit look more pulled together, but it also plays off that 70’s feel.

How To Wear a Blue Denim Jumpsuit

Left to Right: K. Jacques Epicure sandals with Celine sunglasses, a vintage necklace, and a vintage bag; Converse with Celine sunglasses, an In God We Trust NYC necklace, and a tote bag; Repetto Cendrillons with Dita sunglasses, a vintage necklace, and a vintage bag; Prada sandals with vintage earrings and a Charlotte Olympia clutch. The jumpsuit is from A.P.C.

Basically, any shoe can go with a denim jumpsuit.

I’m partial to black shoes… but a red shoe can also add a little personality.

As for accessories, vintage pieces work best with it.

How to Style a White Jumpsuit

Left to Right: Isabel Marant Cholita sandals with Celine sunglasses, a vintage necklace, an Isabel Marant Zap belt, and a Prada nylon bag; Adidas Stan Smiths with Celine sunglasses, a vintage necklace, Madewell belt, vintage ring, and a tote bag; Repetto Camilles with Celine sunglasses, Isabel Marant x H&M earrings, and a tote bag; Manolo Blahnik BBs with Dita sunglasses, an Isabel Marant Devis belt, vintage earrings, David Yurman ring, and a Marc Jacobs clutch. The jumpsuit is from Express by xKarla.

Chunky shoes (like Birkenstocks or Stan Smiths) look as good as a more refined shoe (like a ballet flat or a simple pump) with a white jumpsuit that has a cuffed hem.

To avoid looking like you’re going to a karate class, add your favourite belt to break up the jumpsuit (or to pretend you’re a black belt)… but if you want to stick with the attached belt, it can also totally work, just be careful.

It really doesn’t matter what we call jumpsuits.

As long as you dig how they fit, are ok with being half-naked when you need to go to the bathroom, and you love them…

… then you can call them anything you want.

After all, a rose jumpsuit by any other name would smell be as sweet great.
